How to Maintain Your Reverse Osmosis System
A Reverse Osmosis (RO) system is an excellent investment for ensuring your family has access to pure, great-tasting drinking water. However, like any filtration system, it requires regular maintenance to function optimally.
Regular Filter Changes
The most crucial aspect of RO maintenance is changing the filters on schedule. Most systems have pre-filters (to remove sediment and chlorine) and a post-filter (to polish the water before it reaches your faucet). Generally, pre-filters should be changed every 6-12 months, while post-filters can last up to 12 months.
The RO Membrane
The heart of the system is the semi-permeable membrane. Depending on your water usage and the quality of your incoming water, the membrane typically needs replacing every 2-3 years. If you notice a drop in water production or a change in taste, it might be time for a new membrane.
Sanitizing the System
Once a year, it's recommended to sanitize the entire system, including the storage tank. This prevents bacterial growth and ensures your water remains completely safe. This process involves shutting off the water supply, draining the tank, and using an approved sanitizing solution.
Professional Servicing
While filter changes can often be done by the homeowner, scheduling an annual professional service check ensures that all valves, O-rings, and pressure levels are functioning correctly. A professional can also test the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) of your water to verify the system's efficiency.
